You know, the thing about MTV, he said, looking at the screen with the half-hearted interest of somebody who has just discovered what, exactly, is corrupting today's youth, is that the whole purpose of it is to make you feel like you'll never be as cool as the people on it.
Which, perhaps, was true. No longer, though. If you actually think any of the Duane Reade assistant shelf stockers populating the cast of Jersey Shore are cooler than you, well, then, perhaps it's time to take a good, long look at your life.
But a quick glance at MTV, which proudly features shows like 16 and Pregnant, in which people react to Midwesterners with something other than derisive laughter, just makes me realize I'm getting old.
Which I'm OK with.
Another thing that makes me feel old is that I went to a new dentist this past Saturday, and she was about my age. And she was extremely competent. The fact that people my age are good at stuff and accomplished in a professional sense makes me realize that time is marching by. We're no longer children.
Though this will not stop me from wearing Wily E. Coyote pajamas to bed every night.
Admittedly, I'm grateful to no longer be young. I think if I could count the Situation as my generational contemporary, I would be very depressed indeed. He's no Simon Le Bon. Or Howard Jones.
Even Rick Astley would be an improvement. Because watching Jersey Shore, in the end, is a lot like being Rickrolled. You've just done it to yourself.

In today's episode of the podcast, we have a hilarious conversation about many different topics as we segue into our Movies and TV Shot in New York theme. You don't want to miss it. Especially amusing is our discussion of rude people in movie theaters.
And we now have expensive podcasting equipment, although you probably won't notice much of a difference, except for the fact that we don't really know how to use it yet and the audio is a bit patchy for one or two seconds in a couple of places. I'd apologize, but the podcast is free. So the fact that we haven't started selling infomercial time on it yet is still nothing short of miraculous.
You can stream the show here and on SelfAbsorbed.me, and subscribe in iTunes. As always, please pass the word along to your friends and encourage them to listen.
Because Snooki would want you to.
